2026 Buyer's Guide

The 6 Best Lone Worker Safety Apps in Canada

Nearly every Canadian province requires an effective way of checking on people who work alone, and the rest expect every reasonable precaution. These are the six solutions Canadian safety managers actually shortlist, compared honestly: monitoring models, hardware, and who each one fits.

Full disclosure: CheckMate is our product. So instead of pretending to be neutral, this guide does something more useful: it tells you exactly what each competitor does well, sourced from their own websites, and exactly which situations they fit better than we do. If self-monitoring genuinely suits your team, we say so below.

How We Compared Them

Feature lists blur together in this category. Five questions actually separate lone worker solutions:

  1. Who responds to a missed check-in at 3 a.m.? Your supervisor, or a trained operator at a monitoring station?
  2. Is professional monitoring included, an add-on, or outsourced?
  3. Does it protect workers without smartphones?
  4. What hardware exists for high-risk, no-coverage, or hands-busy environments?
  5. Can you defend it in an audit? Documented, third-party records of every check and response.

The Shortlist

Best self-serve app for supervisor-monitored teams

2. OK Alone

Founded in Victoria, BC • now part of Peoplesafe (UK)

A polished, well-reviewed app built around supervisor self-monitoring: missed check-ins and panic alerts go to your own designated monitors, with a clean dashboard, Microsoft Teams and Geotab integrations, and an open API. Workers can also check in by SMS, by calling an OK Alone number from a cell or landline, or from a desktop app with a panic button. A 24/7 Safety Monitoring Center comes with a higher-tier plan, delivered through AvantGuard, a US-based monitoring provider. The free self-serve trial makes evaluation easy.

How to Actually Choose

Strip away the feature grids and the decision usually comes down to one honest question: when a check-in is missed at 3 a.m., who do you want responsible for what happens next?

If the answer is "our supervisor will see it," a self-monitored app is cheaper and may be enough for a small team. If the answer is "a trained professional, every time, with records to prove it," you want monitoring built into the service rather than bolted on. That is also the configuration that is easiest to defend under provincial working alone regulations; see what your province requires in our province by province legislation guide.

Common Questions

What is the best lone worker app in Canada?

It depends on your monitoring model. Need every missed check-in answered by a live person 24/7, including for workers without smartphones? That is CheckMate's core design. Have a supervisor who can genuinely self-monitor a smartphone-equipped team? OK Alone or SafetyLine are credible. Facing gas exposure risk? Blackline's hardware leads.

Is a lone worker app legally required in Canada?

No specific app is mandated. Most provinces, including BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec, New Brunswick, PEI, and Newfoundland and Labrador, have explicit working alone rules in their occupational health and safety (OHS) laws requiring an effective means of checking on workers who work alone, while Ontario and Nova Scotia hold employers to a general duty to take every reasonable precaution. An automated check-in system with documented response procedures is the most defensible way to meet that duty.

Self-monitored vs professionally monitored: what is the difference?

Self-monitored solutions alert your own supervisors, which depends on your staffing around the clock. Professionally monitored solutions route every alert to trained operators 24/7. Some vendors include this in core pricing; others sell it as an add-on, sometimes through a third-party monitoring company.
