One safety system for 450 staff across 39 branches

Industry: Public library system  •  Lone workers: ~450 staff, 39 branches  •  Region: Victoria to Haida Gwaii

Vancouver Island Regional Library covers roughly 450 employees across 39 branches, from Victoria all the way to Masset in Haida Gwaii. CheckMate gave them a single system to cover all of it, and let them retire a redundant tool in the process.

The challenge

VIRL's working-alone process is genuinely complex. With about 450 employees spread across 39 branches and a service area that stretches from Victoria on Vancouver Island to Masset in Haida Gwaii, the risk picture is never uniform. As Gerald Van De Ven, the library system's Health and Safety Specialist, puts it, the team has "varying situations from people travelling alone, working alone for entire shifts to workers in isolation for short periods of time."

Covering that range to WorkSafeBC's standard is hard enough. Doing it across dozens of sites, without running overlapping systems to get there, is harder.

Why CheckMate

The draw was consolidation. CheckMate could handle every one of those scenarios under one roof, which meant VIRL could meet its regulatory obligations and simplify its toolset at the same time.

"The CheckMate system allowed us to put everything under one system to meet WorkSafeBC requirements and even eliminate a secondary redundant system."

— Gerald Van De Ven, CRSP, Health and Safety Specialist

How it worked

For a program this size, onboarding is where most systems stumble. CheckMate didn't. Gerald credits Doug and the ProTELEC team for making the rollout painless and the ongoing support fast. "They made it so easy to learn the system," he says, "and their question response time is amazing."

The features earned their keep, too. Gerald singles out the mobile app and its Safe Walk function as his personal favourite, the feature that gives staff peace of mind when they step outside a branch on their own.

The verdict

Gerald's read on the system is that it does the heavy lifting without the heavy cost. "It is an extremely cost-effective tool," he says, "with some great add-on features to give workers peace of mind while working alone or in isolation."

"My personal favourite piece of the system is the CheckMate Safe Alone app with the Safe Walk feature, to give workers peace of mind when outside a branch."
